The University

The Florida State University is a coeducational state university operated under the Florida Board of Regents. Some 29,000 students enjoy an attractive campus in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida.

A variety of cultural events are presented throughout the year by campus groups and professional organizations. Plays, concerts, artistic exhibitions, and movies, both current and classic, provide a diversified cultural program. Florida State fields athletic teams in football, baseball, softball, volleyball, golf, tennis, basketball, track, swimming and cross-country. Athletic facilities available to the student include a new 110,000 sq. ft. recreational facility which provides a variety of recreational space including gymnasia, natatorium, spas, racquetball and squash courts, weight training and fitness rooms, indoor track, and other multipurpose activity areas; two gymnasia with outdoor grounds for track and field activities; tennis courts and an Olympic size open-air swimming pool operated every day of the year. The temperate Florida climate permits (in fact, encourages) outdoor activity both summer and winter.

Camping, picnicking, swimming, boating, softball, etc., are popular recreational activities. Adjacent to the campus is a University 18-hole golf course. The University offers housing for both single and married students, and also operates a mobile home park. On-campus housing information may be obtained by writing to the Housing Office, Florida State University. A list of off-campus housing units is distributed by the Student Government through the Off-Campus Housing Office, University Union.

The City of Tallahassee

Built on the hills of North Florida, Tallahassee - the State capital - combines the stimulating atmosphere of a university town with the dynamic spirit of an important political center. A flourishing community with a population of about 200,000, Tallahassee is one of the most prosperous cities in Florida. Lacking heavy industry, the city and surrounding lakes and forests are remarkably pollution-free. Tallahassee is among the fastest growing cities of its size in the country. The 22-story capitol builing dominates the downtown area, and the Tallahassee/Leon County Civic Center offers a variety of popular entertainment events. In addition to Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College make Tallahassee truly a college community. The people of Tallahassee, many of them new residents, tend to be progressive, young, and well-educated.

The arts play an important part in Tallahassee and at the universities. The city has the Little Theater, Children's Theater, Tallahassee Ballet Company, Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science, LeMoyne Art Foundation, the Museum of Florida History, and the Tallahassee Symphony. Each year, Florida State University has at least one visiting artist series, numerous special events and several campus movie series. Moreover, the University's Music School and Theater Arts School, both nationally recognized, produce many fine concerts and plays. Florida A & M also has many cultural events.

Tallahassee has a well-developed city recreation department offering programs in crafts and sports for children and adults. The Leon County Library offers programs in areas ranging from bicycle repair to resum‚ writing. The State Library, located on the east edge of campus, offers unique resources in the documents and history of Florida. A variety of transportation services serve the Tallahassee area. Delta, US Air and American Airlines fly into Tallahassee Municipal Airport. A city bus system provides access to all parts of the city at a nominal cost.

With its lakes, forests, and nearby seacoast, Tallahassee is a prime sports and outdoor recreation area. The city maintains over 300 acres of wooded parks with nature trails, fitness trails, and a variety of sports facilities. Tallahassee has over 50 miles of scenic, recreational and commuting bike routes. The immediate area affords many opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, sailing, and canoeing. Within easy drive are Torreya State Park, Florida Caverns State Park, Maclay State Gardens, Three Rivers Recreational Area, Apalachicola National Forest, Silver Lake Recreational Area, St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, St. George Island State Park, and the many Gulf beaches.
