Setting up your @stat.fsu.edu email address on an iPhone running iOS 7.1.2

If you're on the campus network or any other institution’s network turn off your wifi and use your cell phone's network instead. Problems have occurred with the interaction between your phone and the campus' encrypted network, and you may need to follow additional steps if you don't turn off your wifi during this setup. After this setup you'll be able to check your email using an app while being connected to the campus' network.

Go to the ‘Settings’ app and make sure you start from it's main start page (i.e. There's no text in blue to tap on in the upper right corner of the screen)

Select 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'

Select 'Add Account', then 'Other', then 'Add Mail Account'

Be sure 'IMAP' is selected at the top

Under 'Name' type in your name the way you want it to appear to others when they receive email from you

Under 'Email' enter the address given to you by the department (e.g. frank.wilcoxon@stat.fsu.edu)

Enter the password given to you by the department or the new one you changed it to.

Select 'Next' at the top right corner of the screen.

Under Incoming Mail Server:

1. In the Host Name field type stat.fsu.edu

2. In the Username field type the username (e.g. frank.wilcoxon)

The Password field should already be filled in (but dots shown)

Under Outgoing Mail Server:

1. In the Host Name field type spline.stat.fsu.edu

2. Enter the same user name and password. It will show the word 'Optional' in these fields. Fill these in anyway or you will get errors when you try to send messages.

Select 'Next' at the top right corner of the screen.

On the next screen I suggest you unselect/untoggle 'Notes' and make sure that only 'Mail' is selected (the toggle will be green).

Select 'Save' at the top right corner of the screen.

The phone will now indicate the set up is complete. Open your mail app and try sending a message from your @stat.fsu.edu account.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If you get any error messages follow these steps:

Go to the Settings app and make sure you start from it's main start page.

Select 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' and then select your @stat.fsu.edu account.

Under the IMAP section tap 'Account yourusername@stat.fsu.edu'

Under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' section tap 'SMTP: spline.stat.fsu.edu'

Under the 'Primary Server section' tap 'spline.stat.fsu.edu: ON'

Verify the following:

1. Make sure the 'Server' toggle is on (green) and the user name and passwords are filled in.

2. Make sure the 'Use SSL' toggle is on/green.

3. By 'Authentication' it should say 'Password'. Sometimes a setup will not lead to this being the case. If it does not say 'Password', then tap 'Authentication' and select 'Password' and then tap 'Back' at the top left hand corner of the screen.

4. By 'Server Port' it should say 465. If not, then change it to 465.

Tap 'Done' in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Tap 'Account' in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

Tap the 'Advanced' box at the bottom of the screen.

Under the 'Incoming Settings' section verify the settings are the same as 2. and 3. Above, and make sure the 'IMAP Path Prefix' path is blank and by 'Server Port' it should say 993. It may also say 143. If you weren't able to download new messages from your inbox while connected to the campus network try changing this setting to 143.

Now tap '< Account' in the upper left hand corner of the screen and tap 'Done' in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
