Dear Colleagues:

Following an illustrious 42-year career in the Department of Statistics, Professor Myles Hollander will retire from the Florida State University on May 31, 2007.  On Saturday, April 21st, 2007 the Department of Statistics will host Myles Hollander Day in recognition of his contributions to the field, the Department, and the University. Your presence at this activity will be greatly appreciated.

Some highlights of Dr. Hollander’s distinguished career:

Myles Hollander obtained a B.S. in mathematics from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1961, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics from Stanford University in 1962 and 1965, respectively.  He joined FSU in 1965 and served as department chairman for nine years 1978-1981, 1999-2005.  He was awarded the title of Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor in 1998.  The Lawton award is FSU’s highest faculty honor and only one such award is made each year.  He had visiting appointments at Stanford in 1972-73, 1981-82, and the University of Washington 1989-90.   He served as Theory and Methods Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1993-1996 and received ASA’s Senior Gottfried Noether Award for excellence in nonparametric statistics in 2003.

Hollander Day will begin at 8:30 with a conference featuring invited technical talks on nonparametric statistics, survival analysis and reliability theory at the University Center Club in Building B of the University Center (the stadium complex) on the FSU campus (beginning with refreshments at 8:30 on the 6th floor). The talks will be held on floors 5 and 6 of Building B. Parking is available in the large student parking lot across the street. Lunch will be from 1-2:30 at the 6th floor Osceola Grill at the University Center Club with time afterwards for reminisces from family, friends, and colleagues. There will be a dinner in the evening at the newly opened Residence Inn (600 W. Gaines St.), beginning at 6:30 p.m. We also plan to present Myles with a book of letters of appreciation, written by his peers, former students and friends.
