Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a method by which you can access your email (potentially any "message") that allows access from multiple sources (your desktop, laptop, fun phone, iPad, iPod, etc) without making a mess of your in-box.
The imporant settings you'll need:
Your username and password. You MUST select STARTTLS, our servers do not accept unencrypted connections. You may use the IMAPS port 993, which is by default encrypted.
Server name: ani.stat.fsu.edu
Port: 143 (STARTTLS) -or- 993 (TLS/SSL)
Connection security: STARTTLS
Outgoing Server (SMTP):
What you will use is determined by your location. If you are using a computer off campus, or connecting over a cell provider's mobile broadband, you will need to pick one of these:
spline.stat.fsu.edu, port 465 - your Statistics username and password
spline.stat.fsu.edu, port 587 - your Statistics username and password
Three ports are provided on spline, but some internet providers block connections to port 25 except to their own servers. So try ports 465 or 587.
If you are on campus, and have an FSU IP address, you merely need to use these:
ani.stat.fsu.edu, port 25
No authentication needed, as you have an FSU IP address and you're trusted. However, the authenticating SMTP servers also work perfectly OK from on campus, so feel free to use them anywhere.
For help with specific client setup, consult the FSU Helpdesk client guide.
This may work for other fun phones (iPhone, Blackberry's).
Incoming settings:
IMAP
IMAP Server: ani.stat.fsu.edu
Security: TLS
Server port: 143 (STARTTLS) -or- 993 (TLS/SSL)
Outgoing settings:
SMTP server: spline.stat.fsu.edu
Security: TLS
Server port: 465 -or- 587
Notes: When setting the outgoing settings, your phone will complain bitterly about the self-signed security certificate.
You may want to get the K9 alternative mail application. I'm just a satisfied customer but I haven't configured it to use the department servers, but the same settings should work.
